Kashmiri Wedding Traditions & Rituals, Explained

07 Jul 2026

A Kashmiri wedding is a series of deeply-rooted rituals, each with its own meaning — a blend of faith, family, food, and centuries of custom. Here's a guide to the traditions that make a Kashmiri wedding unforgettable.

Maenziraat — the henna night

On Maenziraat, the bride's hands and feet are adorned with mehendi (henna) amid singing and celebration. It's an intimate, joyful evening with close family and friends, and one of the most photographed functions of the wedding.

Nikah — the marriage ceremony

The Nikah is the formal marriage contract, solemnised in the presence of family and witnesses. It's the heart of the wedding, binding the two families together.

Wazwan — the grand feast

No Kashmiri wedding is complete without Wazwan, the legendary multi-course feast prepared by a master Waza. Guests share a copper trami and work through course after course of Kashmiri delicacies. Learn more in our guide to what Wazwan is.

Wartaav — recorded gifting

Throughout the celebration, gifts flow between families — and in Kashmir they're carefully recorded as Wartaav, so they can be reciprocated at future events. It's a tradition of memory and mutual support that can span generations.

Rukhsati — the farewell

The Rukhsati marks the bride's emotional farewell as she leaves for her new home, often with the wardan (trousseau) she's prepared. It's a tender, bittersweet close to the celebrations.
